  22. There are at least two tree-making IPAS routines out there.

  24. The Yost Group's "Silicon Garden" manual includes the following
  25. request:  "However, the plant models and structures that you've
  26. created with Silicon Garden's L-System algorithms in 3D format (i.e.,
  27. 3DS, PRJ, DXF or any other 3D face/vertex list) are copyrighted
  28. objects due to their algorithmic structure.  You may not re-sell
  29. these models in any format for use with any 3D modeling or rendering
  30. system."

  32. That's right - they ask you to refrain from distributing the
  33. resulting *data* generated by their program.  It's an unprecedented
  34. request, from my knowledge of 3D history.  For example, Adobe *can*
  35. protect their fonts as copyright programs, since Type 1 fonts do
  36. contain PostScript programs.  However, they can't copyright the
  37. *data* composing the outlines.

  39. The "L-systems" they mention were documented in great detail in
  40. academic papers by Prusinkewicz, Lindenmayer, et al., who made no
  41. such claim.  The particular L-systems in Silicon Garden are very
  42. similar to those in Prusinkewicz's book "The Algorithmic Beauty of
  43. Plants."

  45. There's another tree-making system from Schreiber Instruments, but I
  46. don't know if they restrict the redistribution of the data made by
  47. their program.
